Instytut Literacki, founded in 1946 in Rome by Jerzy Giedroyc and later based in Maisons-Laffitte near Paris, was a key Polish émigré publishing house. It published the influential monthly Kultura (637 issues), the quarterly Zeszyty Historyczne (171 issues), and over 400 books through its Kultura Library. Created to promote free speech and shape Polish political and cultural thought in exile, the Institute supported both established and emerging writers, including works by Polish, Ukrainian, and Russian authors censored in their homelands. Under Giedroyc’s leadership, it became the most significant Polish publishing institution abroad, fostering intellectual independence and dialogue between émigré and domestic communities.
