With the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, Romanovsky, a translator from Kyiv, finds himself in a small mountain town in southern Spain, where he continues working on a translation of the novel “2666” — Roberto Bolaño’s dark epic, which has been predicted to herald the literature of the twenty-second century. The search for the mysterious writer Archimboldi, the serial murders of women in the fictional city of Santa Teresa on the US–Mexico border and much else intertwine in Romanovsky’s mind with what is happening in his homeland. Unexpectedly, he too is drawn into a search — for a painting Romanovsky stumbles upon by chance in the Prado Museum…
In the deeply lyrical novel “Ana na ganku,” literature becomes both a refuge and a battlefield, as well as the inspiration for a love that the protagonist surely never expected to find in Spain, yet found all the same.
This book is a kind of meditation. It is an attempt to answer the question of what it means to live, think and love when the world around you is burning.
