One of Serhiy Zhadan’s first novels, now in a new translation from Ukrainian by Aleh Žłutka. Zhadan’s notes are sharp and unkempt; they often shatter the retouched pictures of the past that, after a while, can take shape even in the minds of direct witnesses to events. That is their value. “Anarchy” fell into Aleh Žłutka’s hands in the autumn of 2007 and made such a strong impression that he immediately decided to translate it. The translation was published in Minsk in 2012. In 2014 Zhadan, by then a mature writer, reissued “Anarchy,” having edited his original text: he tidied up the punctuation and removed unnecessary attacks and comments here and there, as a result of which the work became even more expressive and, at the same time, easier to read. In 2022 Aleh Žłutka was fired up by the idea of giving the translation a thorough “remastering” — bringing it closer to the form in which the Ukrainian work exists today. This translation is published by Skaryna.
