“A tremendous work of immense political force, combining poetic writing, critique and even painful beauty.” Begoña Alonso, El Magazine
“A book that manages, as only the best literature can, to reveal before our eyes what cannot be put into words.” Nuria Labari, El País
In November 2021, on the eve of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Daria Serenko published her debut book, in which she gives a direct and courageous voice to the countless women employed in Russia’s public institutions. Through stories and anecdotes from office life, Serenko describes a collective experience of work made up of pointless tasks, ridiculous hierarchies, sexual harassment, blatant misogyny from superiors and the internalized misogyny of the girls themselves — but also solidarity and support.
In seemingly laconic and at times amusing reporting, Daria Serenko penetrates the innards of Putin’s autocratic apparatus, which trains women to be “perfect” workers, mothers and wives, and from there raises an important female and queer voice against institutional violence. Combined with the brilliant illustrations of Ksenia Charyeva, the result is a powerful work of lyrical prose.
