Description

Sasha Galitsky is an Israeli artist, woodcarver, and author of the books Mama, ne goriui! (Mama, Don’t Grieve!) and Ne bois'! (Don’t Be Afraid!) For more than twenty years he has led woodcarving studios in nursing homes and community centers across Israel. This book grew out of conversations, chance remarks, jokes, quarrels, memories, and the silences of the people the author meets every week around a large worktable. There is almost no fiction here, only life as it really sounds: funny, frightening, absurd, touching, and very much alive. The heroes of these stories are people from seventy to well over a hundred years old who have lived through wars, emigration, loneliness, love, the loss of memory, and the loss of loved ones. But even in the hardest moments they go on arguing, joking, falling in love, squabbling over paints, and asking when they will finally be allowed to paint the deer.
