The writer’s very first novel, Byly syn, tells the story of a young man who was injured in the terrible crush at Niamiha and lay in a coma for ten years. He was looked after by his grandmother, who in turn tried to see the world through her grandson’s eyes so that she could tell him everything when he recovered. She tells, and the reader recalls what Belarusians lived through during those years: it was as if the whole country had lain in a coma, lacking the impulse that would make this living body get up and do something for itself. And the consequences of all that lying still catch up with you, even when you come back to life and hope appears.
