“Devyanoska” (a colloquial reference to the 1990s) is a collection of texts by Viktor Shenderovich, written across very different years and constituting an artistic reflection on several eras of Russian life. For forty years—from early Andropov to late Putin—Shenderovich attempts to answer the question why the country has never emerged from servitude, and at what point we stopped hearing the warning signals.
“I didn’t make much of a Pimen,” the author admits, referring to the chronicler in Pushkin’s Boris Godunov, “but I turned out to be a decent reagent. Much can be seen clearly through these texts, and from a distance it becomes clearer still.”
The collection includes several previously unpublished stories, aphorisms, poems, and scripts. And who is “Devyanoska”? Shenderovich himself, of course—who else could it be.
