This is a book about people and what they did. About those who are usually portrayed as mere will-less cogs in a machine that carried out Stalin’s will.

While researching the history of his repressed ancestors, the author uncovered the full chain of perpetrators of the Great Terror in a single region, the Republic of the Volga Germans, from the investigator to the firing squad. At the start of this historical investigation there were only signatures on interrogation records and orders. At the end there are complete biographies of the people who carried out mass killings in the name of the state. Most of them were entirely unknown until now, and their documents and photographs are published here for the first time.
