Daria Serenko. Ik wens mijn huis as. Translated by Els de Roon Hertoge, Annelies de Hertogh. Amsterdam: Koppernik, 2024.

Description

The groundbreaking Ik wens mijn huis as by the Moscow poet and activist Daria Serenko brings together in one book her poignant reflections from the period just before the war and her poetic, desperate self-questioning after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In the first part, Meisjes en instituties, she examines in an almost laconic manner the relationship between young women working in state cultural institutions and the absurd patriarchal attitudes that prevail there. Their sporadic solidarity cannot hold out against the endemic misogyny, the endless bureaucracy and, above all, the swelling dictatorial threat.

After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Daria Serenko’s view of the world changes radically. While in prison for supporting the opposition leader Navalny, she begins Ik wens mijn huis as, in which she explores guilt, violence, activism and exile in an urgent and poetic way.
