Andrei Zubov. Istoriia Rossii XIX Stoletiia. Tom I. Bratislava: Vidim Books, 2024.

Description

The History of Nineteenth-Century Russia, Volume I, by Doctor of Historical Sciences and Professor Andrei Zubov, is not a chronological retelling of events, but a reflection on the causes that made the collapse of “historical Russia” increasingly possible. The catastrophe of the early twentieth century, Professor Zubov argues, has much deeper roots than is commonly assumed. A careful study of these causes helps not only to better understand the past, but also to explain the present.

The first volume covers an extremely important period in the country’s transition to modern statehood—efforts to abolish serfdom, the drafting of a constitution, and the establishment, thanks to Alexander I, of a new order in Europe. These reforms, many of which were unsuccessful, nevertheless transformed the mindset of the Russian elite and laid the foundations of the Golden Age of Russian culture and the Great Reforms of the era of Alexander II.
