Description

Jak ja była malalietkaj is an autofiction that became an event in contemporary Lithuanian literature. It is a daring and unvarnished account of the coming of age of a girl searching for herself in a post-Soviet country of crooked mirrors. A Soviet childhood, youth in Vilnius in the last decade of the twentieth century, life abroad, doctoral studies, love affairs, sex, travel, parties, failed attempts to write. Could it be that none of the existing “female” roles, no identity at all, fits — that they all slide down like bad tights? Virginija Kulvinskaitė is a writer and literary critic. She debuted with the poetry collection The Twin (2017, Naujas vardas). The novel Jak ja była malalietkaj (2019, Kitos knygos) is her second book. She has also published the short-story collection Four (2023, Kitos knygos). Jak ja była malalietkaj was included in the “Top 12 Most Creative Books of Lithuania” and the “Top 5 Prose Books for Adults” of 2019, and has been presented at Lithuanian and international book fairs and literary festivals.
