Description

This historical novel is set in the second half of the eighteenth century. Above all, it is a journey through the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, where peoples, religions and cultures intertwine. It is the story of the charismatic self-proclaimed messiah Jacob Frank, told by his followers, documented in court records and ridiculed by his enemies. In a Gazeta Wyborcza poll, Polish readers named this novel the best book of the first quarter of the twenty-first century. By the time of the Belarusian edition, the work had been translated into fifteen languages, and its readership in Poland alone had exceeded half a million. It is undoubtedly one of the most important works of contemporary Polish literature, one that strengthened the author’s standing among the outstanding writers of world literature and contributed to Olga Tokarczuk being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for 2018.
