Kremulatar is Sasha Filipenko’s best-known novel. It won the prestigious French Transfuge prize for best European novel of 2023. The novel opens with the events of June 23, 1941, when the German army’s advance sets off another wave of spy-hunting in the USSR. It immerses the reader in the atmosphere of the 1930s and is based on the case file of Pyotr Ilyich Nesterenko, the first director of the Moscow Crematorium, whose testimony and diaries trace one man’s fate against the backdrop of the defining events of the first half of the twentieth century: wars and revolution, emigration and return to the USSR in the years of the Terror. The author explores the inner world of a man faced with an impossible choice.
