The compiler taught literature for more than twenty years to students learning Russian as a foreign language, and in preparing the commentary he was guided above all by their needs. During the author’s lifetime, the text of the novella “The Queen of Spades” (hereafter QS), believed to have been written in the autumn of 1833, was published twice in 1834: in the pages of a journal (hereafter QS-1) and in a collection of novellas (hereafter QS-2). This edition reproduces and comments on the text of QS in its final version. The commentary attempts to recreate the background against which the novella’s first readers perceived it: the real-historical, lexical and phraseological, genre and stylistic, and motif and plot background. Thus, only those Gallicisms are noted that came into use no earlier than the first third of the nineteenth century: it is assumed that, unlike those assimilated earlier, they were or could be recognized as borrowings by readers whose command of Russian and French was unequal or who, being bilingual, retained the capacity for interlingual reflection. Observations on the rhythm and phonics of QS are likewise selective: their purpose is to recall the value of articulatory empathy in the slow reading of a poet’s prose. Mentions of foreign-language works are accompanied by information about their Russian translations, if these appeared no later than the first third of the nineteenth century; for translations from French this applies only in individual cases. Translations of quotations into Russian, unless the source of the translation is indicated, are by the compiler of the commentary.
