Aeschylus. Persy. Translated with commentary by Grigory Starikovsky. Tel Aviv: Babel Books Tel Aviv, 2025.

Description

Here is a new translation of The Persians (472 BCE), which is not only the earliest surviving tragedy by Aeschylus (525/4-456/5 BCE) but also, chronologically, the first of all extant dramatic texts. The translation presented here is an experiment: it abandons the five- (or six-) foot iambic verse in which the non-lyric parts of Greek tragedy have traditionally been rendered in Russian. The translator’s aim is to make the text as clear as possible, a text that reveals, among other things, the circumstances of the naval battle of Salamis (480 BCE), which Aeschylus himself witnessed, having fought alongside other Greeks for freedom from Persian despotism.
