Today the world of the Roma remains closed, even though they live everywhere. They are hated, feared, mythologized. For an outsider, getting into a Roma camp and coming to know its paradoxical laws is nearly impossible. But… the Roma have children. Who go to school. Where they are treated as second-class people. In one such school, a young teacher is put in charge of Class 1-V, the "Gypsy class." Her lonely fight for these little ones' education and equal rights, as described in this book: what is it? Throwing herself on a grenade? Self-sacrifice bordering on altruism? Or an example of devotion to good that most of us can only aspire to? The Roma children repay society's prejudice, alienation, and contempt with theft, begging, and delinquency. The battle is fought not only in the staff room, the courtroom, and the police station, but deep inside the camp itself. So much effort, and so many moments of despair. Ya ne spravliaius (I Can't Cope) was the working title of this debut novel by Dina Kabulova, a writer and teacher. But was she really unable to do so?
