Description

Elena Zelinskaia’s new novel is a profound narrative about the fates of Russian émigrés caught in the turbulent currents of history. The story begins with the discovery of a diary that brings back to life the legacy of the composer Alexei Butakov and opens the door to the world of the First Wave of emigration. The novel’s characters — musicians, writers, journalists — are cast by fate onto the Balkans, where they live through a brief period of peace between two world catastrophes. Amid constant trials, they are forced to make difficult choices while trying to preserve their humanity. A hundred years later, a new wave of emigrants brings new Russians to Belgrade, who, like their predecessors, face the difficulty of finding their place in life. What trace will they leave in the history of this city? Will they be able to cope with the trials of fate and find answers to the eternal questions of choosing between guilt and responsibility, losses and discoveries? Zelinskaia masterfully interweaves the fates of two generations, leaving the reader to ponder how the events of the past affect the present and how history leaves its marks on people and places. Ultimately, the novel becomes a reflection on what remains when everything is lost, and what trace the last Russians leave in the memory of the city and the world.
