This book began with a question that the Belarusian writer Svetlana Alexievich put to Marie Luise Knott, a well-known German expert on Arendt’s intellectual legacy, at a festival of international literature in Cologne in 2022. “Can you tell me what Hanna Arendt thought about collective guilt — is there such a thing as German guilt?” Svetlana asked. She was interested in the notion of “organized guilt,” that is, the fact that the Nazis made Germans co-authors of their crimes or passive accomplices.
As they had no chance to discuss the question in detail, Svetlana suggested that Marie Luise compile a book of Arendt’s essays for the publisher Pflaumbaum. The result is the first book by the renowned thinker in Belarusian.
The essays were translated by Alena Piatrovič, Volha Hronskaja, Alena Talapila and Kaciaryna Tevies.
