Why did the attempt at transformation in the 1990s fail, leaving Russia under harsh authoritarian rule?
The well-known economist Sergei Aleksashenko continues the search for an answer to this question that he pursued in his previous books — “The Battle for the Ruble,” devoted to the events of 1994–1998, and “Counter-Revolution,” in which he analyzed the changes that took place in Russia in 2000–2017, during Vladimir Putin’s rule.
This time the author focuses on the period 1990–1995, which largely determined the subsequent course of Russian and world history, and on a narrower question: why did the Western countries, above all the United States, not come to Russia’s aid and not dare to draw it into their economic and political orbit, as they did with Germany and Japan after the Second World War?
The book is addressed to everyone who cares about Russia’s historical destiny and future.
