In her home country, Maarja Kangro’s documentary novel “Šklianoje dzicia” was called one of the most difficult, but also one of the best, Estonian books. In this work there is no boundary between the private and the public. Several foreign countries, political crises and literary vanity fairs form the backdrop against which the heroine descends into her own hell and provides a precise cartography of it, without hiding details or names and without averting her gaze from the catastrophe. This book speaks to the reader clearly, openly and with detachment from its own emotion, but there is no certainty about what will happen to the reader’s emotions.
