Serguéi Davydov. Springfield. Translated by Alexandra Rybalko Tokarenko. Bilbao: Consonni, 2025.

Description

A text with a strong dramatic structure, built from a rapid exchange of retorts, jokes, dialogue and gags. A voice that unsettles, moves and leaves its mark.

Andrei and Matvei try to flee Togliatti, their depressed industrial hometown, hoping to escape their miserable families and find something better in western Russia. Young, gay and broke, they survive amid situations as comic as they are tragic, fueled by dreams that always seem to be postponed. Springfield is not only a story of love and uprootedness: it is a generational portrait, told with humor and rawness, of those who grew up under the weight of repression, off the radar of cosmopolitan Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Banned in Russia under the law against “LGBTIQ+ propaganda,” Springfield has become one of the most talked-about books of 2023, acclaimed by the media.
