What does a person feel who has been stripped of rights and property, deported, and sent to a camp? How do people cope with such blows of fate, what do they hold on to, how do they survive? How does the experience of our ancestors affect us and our personal lives, and is it possible to free ourselves from that influence?
These and many other questions are asked by the protagonist of the novella Strakh zapakha (The Fear of Smell), the Grandson. He is lonely and lives in Bonn. He dreams of a family and of happiness. During the pandemic, to his own surprise, he begins to look into the history of his Grandfather, a Volga German who lived through dekulakization, long wanderings, and a labor camp. The Grandfather tells the story of his life. He tells it very simply, without embellishment or dramatization.
The novella lives through two characters. Two narrative lines move toward each other from different points, touch, and in places even intertwine. Are you ready to set out on this journey in order to return stronger, more aware, more mature? Will you find, together with the Grandson, the answers to the main questions?
The stories included in the book also speak to the reader in different voices about memory and the search for freedom.
