Калі б на маіх карцінах была маленькая шуфлядка, я б схаваў у ёй гэты тэкст. А можа, ён бы ўвесь зьмясьціўся на сьпіне нейкага пэрсанажа або ў кішэні штаноў аднаго з клэзмэраў на маіх тэатральных росьпісах. 

…Я бачу далячынь ракі, мост, за ім — агароджу вечнасьці. Зямлю і магілу. Тут яна, мая душа. Тут шукайце мяне, тут я, тут мае карціны, мая творчасьць. Мая туга. Вось яе партрэт. Або хіба ня ўсё роўна — гэта ж я. Хто я? Возера пакутаў. Заўчасная сівізна, вочы — горад сьлёз, душа, якой амаль няма, мозг, якога няма зусім. Дык што ж ёсьць?

If there were a little drawer in my paintings, I would hide this text in it. Or perhaps all of it would fit on the back of some character, or in the trouser pocket of one of the klezmers in my theatrical murals.

...I see the distance of a river, a bridge, and beyond it the fence of eternity. Earth and a grave. Here she is, my soul. Look for me here: here I am, here are my paintings, my work. My longing. Here is its portrait. Or does it really matter? It’s me, after all. Who am I? A lake of suffering. Premature grayness, eyes a city of tears, a soul that is almost not there, a brain that is not there at all. So what is there?
