Description

Having emigrated at the height of Brezhnev’s stagnation, the author found himself in New York at the age of 37. What emigration gave him and what it took away is what this book sets out to understand. Dmitry Tarasenkov grew up in Moscow literary circles. His father, a nomenklatura critic, was an emblematic figure in the system of socialist realism. The son worked for Radio Liberty. Like his father, he was an avid book collector. He has seen the world and known many remarkable people. Shaking the kaleidoscope of his life, the memoirist is skeptical of established stereotypes — he has no shortage of sharp memory — and with a cheerful surprise that passes on to the reader, he shares the details of the world that surrounded him, “here” and “there.”
