Description

For the first time, three of the most important works by Ludmila Petrushevskaia, a classic of contemporary Russian literature, are collected under one cover: the novel Vremia noch' (The Time: Night) and the novellas Svoi krug (Our Crowd) and Smotrovaia ploshchadka (The Observation Deck).

Vremia noch'  (The Time: Night), Petrushevskaya’s first and best-known novel, has been translated into thirty languages and brought the author worldwide recognition. Written in the form of a confessional diary, it tells the story of a woman trying to hold together a disintegrating family amid poverty, loneliness, and responsibility for those close to her.

The novella Svoi krug (Our Crowd) acquired cult status in the samizdat literary milieu of the 1970s and largely defined the direction of late Soviet prose. Its main themes are alienation and the inability to truly understand one another.

Smotrovaia ploshchadka (The Observation Deck) is one of the writer’s early works, first published in the magazine Druzhba narodov in 1982. This novella already shows the central themes of Petrushevskaia’s work: human loneliness, powerlessness in the face of circumstances, and the attempt to make sense of a world that cannot be changed.

Brought together in this unique edition, these works form a many-sided portrait of the late Soviet era and stand as testimony to the literary genius of Ludmila Petrushevskaia. The book is supplemented with graphic works by Ludmila Petrushevskaya, created specially for this edition in 2026.
