Zalina Marshenkulova. Vse bylo khorosho, poka ne prishli feministki. Bratislava: Vidim Books, 2026.

Description

An activist, liberal feminist and creator of the public pages Breaking Mad, Maiachok antikhrista (“The Antichrist’s Beacon”) and Zhenskaia vlast' (“Women’s Power”), Zalina Marshenkulova has been at the center of many scandals exposing misconduct in the Russian media. She has almost grown used to receiving death threats. But after such scandals sexist ads are pulled, companies apologize, and society learns to tell barbarity from civilized behavior. If it weren’t for her, advertising and the media would still be calling women “skanks,” comparing them to dogs, and showing them forever sucking on something or on their knees.

This book is the history of the feminist movement in Russia since 2010, told from Zalina’s own point of view. The facts here are as important as society’s reaction to them. The Pussy Riot case, the #MeToo movement, the harassment of feminists, the decriminalization of domestic violence, the Russian state’s steps toward claiming ownership of women’s bodies — all of this is part of Russian women’s difficult road to freedom.
