никак не могу добиться точности, чтобы ответить по поводу предлагаемой Вами книги стихов (или книжечки): один типограф заболел, у другого (Башкирцева) нет телефона, а живет он далеко за городом и попасть к нему я могу только еще через неделю <…>. Но по моим расчетам, такая книжечка, на хорошей бумаге (типа «Мостов» первых номеров), с обложкой тоже из более хорошей толстой бумаги, обойдется, 1.000 экз<емпляров>, примерно в 200–250 долларов (цены растут не по дням, а по часам). Выйдет меньше – хорошо, но вряд ли выйдет. Время – думаю, что сделают довольно быстро, задержки тут главным образом из-за брошюровки, но такую тонкую, надеюсь, сброшюруют скоро. Если это подходит, присылайте, уточним потом. Дальнейшее – корректура и т. п., все сделаем, как Вы пишете, включая и то, что об этом никому не будет известно. Потом договоримся и о распространении.
Не уверен, что нужно будет больше тысячи, – скорее уверен в том, что и этого будет много. Время меняется быстро, – еще несколько лет назад могло бы разойтись больше, а теперь – сомнительно. Набор, однако, сохранить можно, да и тут главное не набор, при таком объеме, а бумага, печать, брошюровка, для стоимости.
Обложку сделаем простую, но все же лучше сделать клише: хороших заглавных шрифтов тут нет. Попрошу знакомого художника, он делает это нам бесплатно, а клише будет стоить всего 8–10 долларов. <…>

I still do not have exact information so as to respond to your proposal of the poetry book (or a booklet): one printer got sick, and another (Bashkirtsev) does not have a telephone, and he lives far from the city, and I will only be able to visit him in another week <…>. But according to my calculations, such a booklet, on good paper (as in the first issues of Bridges), with the cover also made of better, thicker paper, will cost around 200–250 dollars for 1 000 copies (the prices are rising by leaps and bounds). If it comes out to be less – good, but that is unlikely. Time: I think they will do it rather quickly, the main delays here are mainly caused by binding, but such a thin book as this will be bound soon, I hope. If this suits you, send it over, and we’ll specify the details later. Everything else – proofreading etc. – we’ll do everything as you write, including that no one is going to know about it. Then we can agree on the distribution.
I am not sure we’ll need more than a thousand copies – I am rather sure that even this is going to be a lot. Times are changing fast: just a few years ago, we would have distributed more, but now that is doubtful. The typesetting, however, can be retained, and the main cost with such a volume is not typesetting, but the paper, printing, and binding.
We’ll make the cover plain, but it is still better to make a stereo plate: there are no good uppercase fonts here. I will ask one artist I know: he does it for us for free, and the stereo plate will only cost 8–10 dollars. <...>
