I was intrigued by the words: “I’m waiting for Shalamov.” Is he going to come? As far as I know, he isn’t. I am interested because I am “making” his book. He complained on numerous occasions that Novyi Zhurnal was publishing his stories one at a time, but no one published them all at once. “Whoever in charge” decided to collect all his stories and publish them in a separate book, and they offered me to do the job as an editor and write an introductory article. Back in the spring, I collected all the stories, wrote an article, and sent them over (the book is being published in London, because of how cheap the sterling is now). They should have already sent back the proofs, but it got delayed.
