Видели ли Вы в литературном приложении к лондонскому «Таймз» от 9-го марта мое письмо по поводу их рецензии на повесть Л.К. Чуковской, которая появилась в «Новом журнале» под названием «Софья Петровна», а потом в Париже под названием «Опустелый дом»? В прошлом году Ю.П. Анненков (которого я не хотел называть в своем письме) показывал мне в Париже первоначально приготовленное (но не выпущенное) издание этой повести под названием «Повесть о скорбной матери» (издатель – те же «Пять Континентов»). Почему в парижском издании Софья Петровна стала Ольгой Петровной, я не знаю: у меня есть письмо из Москвы от конца 1962 г. или начала 1963 г., в котором говорится об этой повести, и там и сама повесть и героиня ее зовутся Софья Петровна.
Have you seen in the literary supplement to the London “Times” from March 9th my letter regarding their review of L. K. Chukovskaia’s novella, which appeared in Novyi Zhurnal under the title "Sofiya Petrovna" and then in Paris under the title Opustelyi Dom?
Last year Y. P. Annenkov (whom I did not want to mention in my letter) showed to me in Paris an initially prepared (but not published) edition of this novella under the title "Tale of the Mourning Mother" (the publisher is the same "Five Continents"). Why in the Parisian edition Sofia Petrovna became Olga Petrovna, I do not know: I have a letter from Moscow from the end of 1962 or the beginning of 1963, which tells about this story, and there both the novella itself and the heroine are called Sofia Petrovna.
