I don’t know whether you agree with me that among the poems in it there are a lot of weak and simply bad ones. Nonetheless these bad poems aren’t always even interesting and under normal circumstances wouldn’t have even been worth publishing. No self-respecting editor would’ve accepted them. For that reason it is a pity that we have to publish them only because they cannot be published over there. Of course there are exceptions. There are poems that are fairly good, and there are even poems that aren’t especially good but interesting. But both are very few.

Retyping and mailing fees came out to 26 dollars and 45 cents. Do not stress about sending out the difference, but when Sintaksis appears in your journal send me one or two extra copies (I’m subscribed for one). I ask the same for the issue with Brodsky’s poems. I don’t know if you have gotten Grynberg’s Vozdushnye Puti yet. There are a few of Brodsky’s poems in there all of which will be included in our volume (some of them you had already published in Grani). There is really interesting material there about Mandelshtam, Akhmatova’s memoirs, and etc. I had almost all of these materials before, but with the request that I can’t publish them entirely; I have used some of these materials in my introduction and commentary to the first volume of Mandelshtam’s new edition that should come out soon. <...>
