Я не сразу согласилась их брать, потому что, когда спросила [Оксмана], хочет ли она, чтобы они были напечатаны, он утверждал, что «она хочет, но не хочет знать». Я сказала ему, что раз так, получается нечестно по отношению к ней, и что я сама не стала бы их печатать – он подчеркнул, что решение, конечно, полностью за Вами, и что обо всем, что он Вам посылает, он предоставляет судить и решать Вам, но что стихи тем временем будут сохранены – и я с этим согласна. <…> Стихи действительно циркулируют по всей Москве в списках, сделанных, видимо, в редакции «Нового мира».
By now you have doubtless received the photograph and the A<nna> A<khmatova> poems. I resisted taking these a bit, because when I asked [Oksman] if she wanted them published he insisted “she wants but doesn’t want to know.” I told him on that basis I didn’t think it was fair to her and I myself wouldn’t publish them – he stressed that of course this was entirely your decision, that whatever he sent you he left entirely to your discretion and judgment, but that meanwhile the poems would be preserved – and this seems to me to be so. <...> It’s true, however, the poems are circulating all over Moscow from copies evidently made in the Новый мир office.
