An artist keenly senses what is to come. Malevich’s Black Square is the future he saw, a future that held the First World War, the Civil War, the Gulag. I don’t think I am the only one who now feels Russia as a black square. Russian culture, as a hundred years ago, is having its spine broken. In the end everything will benefit literature, even a broken spine. Without Kolyma there would have been no Kolyma Tales. Literature, alas, is indifferent to the fate of writers; only the texts matter to it. Texts will keep being born as long as the language is alive. But what is literature for?”
