Pokolenie "M" (Generation “M”) is not a novel but rather a chronicle, the Tale of Bygone Years, which in modern language means “a story about years gone by.”
Though not only about bygone ones...
My generation is the luckiest in Russia’s entire half-millennium of history. There, in Russian history, almost everything, from the point of view not of the “statists” but of living people, was either pitch black or dull gray. Breaths of even relative freedom were rare and brief: a little at the start of the reign of Alexander the Blessed, a few years at the start of the reign of Alexander the Liberator, a few months after the October Manifesto, a few months after February. And that was all. Asphyxia again. But we were simply incredibly lucky. By my count, the “oxygen” era began in the autumn of 1986 and lasted until March 2014, when the valve closed again. For more than a quarter of a century we were by turns relatively, fully, and then relatively free again. So we are the Happiest Russian Generation. And if we failed to protect our freedom, we have no one to blame but ourselves.
My new book is about us. It is called “Generation M.” Depending on my mood, I decode the abbreviation “M” in different ways.Boris Akunin
