A prose writer and poet, memoirist, professional editor and literary critic. Daughter of Kornei Chukovsky. Under the penname Aleksei Uglov, in 1920-1930s Chukovskaia published several books for children. Her novella Sofia Petrovna - the only known work of fiction about the Great Terror - was written in the immediate aftermath of the events. It was first published in Paris under a modified title (The Deserted House, to echo a line from Anna Akhmatova's Requiem) in 1965, and almost simultaneously serialized in New York in Novyi Zhurnal (vols. 83-84).
